Abstract
Forensic science is used to determine time of death, cause of death, as well
as identify who the victim was, if the body was removed from the scene, and
more. Forensic entomology is a branch of forensic science, this department
deals with the study of bugs associated with crimes. They try to determine a
minimum postmortem interval, minPMI, or time of death, based on flyâÂÂs life
cycles. Since the life cycle of flies, like Calliphoridae or blow fly, is so
predictable, they depend on the regularity of it to use mathematic equations
to see how many different generations of flies are present and how old the
oldest flies are. Fly arrival time is also, typically, consistent allowing for
these results to be reduced to how many hours ago someone was killed.
There are many types of flies studied but the most popular one is the blow fly which arrives and lays its eggs during the day, whereas greenbottle flies lay their eggs at night (Amendt et al. 2011).
