Abstract

This project explores how the human body is affected by ketosis, a metabolic state triggered when carbohydrate intake is significantly reduced. In ketosis, the body begins to use fat as its primary fuel source instead of sugars and carbs. The ketogenic diet, originally developed in the 1920s to treat epilepsy, continues to show promise in areas such as neurological function and mental health. This research reviews the benefits and risks of ketosis, including its effects on hormone levels, mental health, organ function, and potential side effects like kidney stones and the "keto flu." The findings suggest that while some individuals may experience reduced depression and weight loss, others may face complications. The project also provides practical recommendations for those beginning the diet to reduce side effects and support a healthy transition into ketosis.
